Obituary

In Loving Memory of Sophie Thomas

With hearts broken beyond measure, we announce that Sophie passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 36, following a long and courageous struggle with illness. Though her journey ended far too soon, the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the remarkable woman she was will remain with us forever.

Sophie was born in Ontario, Canada before moving with her family to Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 10. Though Sophie spent most of her life in the United States, she never lost her Canadian pride and remained a die-hard Canadian at heart.

From childhood, she embraced life wholeheartedly. Bright, curious, determined, and endlessly full of energy, she approached every opportunity with enthusiasm. In grade school, she devoted five years to Odyssey of the Mind, advancing to three World Finals competitions where her creativity and spontaneous personality shined. Sophie also had a passion for speaking French. Having become fluent while attending a fully French school in Ontario, she commuted daily to the high school as of grade 5 to study advanced French courses. At Forest Hills Central High School, she fell in love with the marching band playing trumpet, eventually leading the band as a drum major in her senior year. She went on to earn her degree from Michigan State University, where she proudly became a lifelong Spartan. Her green and white spirit never faded. Go Green!

After college, Sophie settled in Chicago, where she explored several career paths before discovering her passion for technology recruiting. Her intelligence, intuition, and natural ability to connect with people made her both a respected professional and a deeply valued friend. Later, she and her husband made their home in San Francisco, where they built a life filled with ambition, growth, travel, and shared dreams.

Long weekends on Big Star Lake brought her and us immense happiness. Organizing her Big Star Olympics, competing in shuffleboard, dancing wildly on the pontoon boat to loud music, especially the "Cupid Shuffle" with her mom, dad, and brother Evan, was one of her purest joys. Soph filled her life with laughter and so many "Sophie-isms," the expressions and quirks that could turn an ordinary moment into a story worth retelling.

In the later years of her life, Sophie faced an unimaginably difficult journey with quiet courage and remarkable resilience. Despite years of relentless challenges, she never stopped hoping and never stopped trying. While illness gradually changed the course of her life, it did not erase the essence of who she was: vibrant, loving, intelligent, and deeply connected to those she held so dear. Even as her world grew increasingly heavy, Sophie remained unmistakably present to those who loved her. We will always remember the brilliance of the woman she was before illness overshadowed so much of what she deserved to experience.

Sophie is survived by her devoted parents, Bradley and Elizabeth Thomas; her adored brother, Evan Thomas, and his fiancée, Catherine Blaney; her cherished grandparents, Hugh and Marjorie Thomas and Reginald Taylor; her uncle and aunt, Norman and Peggy Thomas; her uncle and aunt, Drew and Anne Thomas; her cousins, Gregory and Jessica; and countless dear relatives and friends whose lives were forever brightened by knowing her. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandmother, Patricia Taylor.

Sophie also leaves behind her former husband, Jason Frederick. Although their marriage eventually ended, theirs was a relationship marked by deep love, shared history, and enduring care. Throughout Sophie’s long illness, Jason remained a steady and compassionate presence, offering support and kindness during some of life’s most difficult moments. For that, our family will always hold deep gratitude.

The depth of our grief is immeasurable. Yet even in sorrow, we remember Sophie not for the illness she endured, but for the extraordinary life she lived, loved, and shared. She taught us that joy can be loud, love can be effortless, and laughter is contagious. Her absence leaves an unbearable silence, but her presence remains everywhere in the memories, the stories, and the hearts of all who loved her. Her life was defined not by the weight of her struggle, but by her brilliance, her huge laughter, and her fierce love for her family and friends. She will always be remembered in the places she loved most, in the people she loved best, and in the quiet moments where her light still feels present.

A private gathering of immediate family will be held at a later time at the lake she loved so deeply, a place that brought her peace, joy, and some of her happiest memories.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Sophie’s memory may consider a contribution to the Forest Hills Central High School Marching Band, one of the great joys of her younger years. Forest Hills H S Band Boosters Venmo:fhcbands

Soph’s family will be creating a memorial tree garden at her Big Star Lake home. This will be privately funded by her family and will continue to grow over the years. Friends and loved ones who wish may, in time, contribute a tree or flowering shrub honoring her memory within the space and be part of this living tribute.
