Richard "Dick" Stephen Sullivan was born to Anna and Michael Sullivan on September 22, 1923 in Massachusetts and entered into eternal rest on January 23, 2016 in Pico Rivera, California. He was 92 years old. Richard was the youngest of Michael Francis Sullivan and Anna Veronica Wrigley’s three sons. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy and was given an Honorable Discharge. Richard was employed as a Rate Analyst for Santa Fe Railroad for over 40 years.
He attended and graduated from Holy Family Grammar School and New Bedford High School. He worked at Trudean’s Pharmacy. When he joined the Navy, he was put into the medical corps. He was station at Norfolk and Quantico, Virginia. While he was station at Virginia, he met Alice H. Jenney also from New Bedford. They were married December 29, 1943 at Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
While he was in Virginia, he worked for a group of doctors that wanted to keep him there. He was a good corpsman, took shorthand and typed. He knew all the medical terms, their spelling, and their meaning.
After his only child, Betty, was born, he was station at Boston Naval Hospital. Then he went to California and on to Japan as part of the Occupational Forces.
When Richard returned to California, he graduated from Woodbury College. Not long after graduation he was called up for the Korean incident and was stationed at San Diego for the entire time.
When he returned to Montebello, California, he went to work for Santa Fe Railroad until he retired at the age of 60 years in 1983. Richard joined Granada Masonic Lodge in 1959. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on October 26, 1960. Later the Granada Masonic Lodge joined with the Alhambra Lodge. Richard, Alice, and Betty joined the San Gabriel Valley White Shrine in 1966. San Gabriel Valley White Shrine merged with Temple City White Shrine. Richard served active and reserve in the Navy for a total of 42 years.
Richard, Alice, and Betty Sullivan began square dancing in September of 1953. Richard square danced until October 2011 when his health made it so he couldn’t keep dancing.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents Michael Francis and Anna, his oldest brother Arthur (Helen), middle brother Robert (Frances), oldest niece Sandra Sullivan Cathart, and cousins John and Mary Brown.
Richard is survived by his daughter, Betty Sullivan of Montebello, his sister in-law Frances (Robert) Sullivan of Massachusetts, Richard (Isabel’s son) and Tricia Bosworth (Frances’ daughter), Mary Beth Ganache (Frances), Kathleen Sullivan (Frances), Suzanne Sullivan Manley (Frances), Michael (Frances), Cathy Martin (Helen’ daughter), Lureen (Bryce) Sullivan Milroy ( Helen), and James (Helen). Richard was greeted at Heaven's Gate by his loving wife Alice Sullivan who preceded him in death (February 2000).
