Richard V. Montez, 82, was born in Los Angeles, California on February 20, 1931 and passed away at his residence in Montebello, surrounded by his loving family on January 13, 2014.
He attended James A. Garfield high school from 1947 to 1950.While at Garfield he excelled in track and field and represented Garfield in the 1947 City finals. He met Helen Cobos in high school and they were married in 1951, and remained married upon her passing in 2011.
Richard and Helen had five children: Mary, James, Thomas, Richard and Nancy who passed away in 1984. Richard had 10 grandchildren and two great granddaughters who he loved very much.
Richard was employed as a sheet metal worker for approximately 40 years and was a member of the Sheet Metal Union #105.
He coached youth football and baseball belonging to the Montebello jr. baseball association where he coached kids ages 8 through 18.
Richard loved The New York Yankees, the U.C.L.A Bruins, and the sport of track & field. He also enjoyed music; his favorites were Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, jazz, and Big Band. But most of all Richard loved his wife Helen, his family and friends. He will surely be missed by all. May he rest in peace.
A Catholic Vigil will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 6:00pm at St. Benedict Church, and a visitation at the church from 6:00-8:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at 9:00am at St. Benedict Church with interment following at Resurrection Cemetery.
