Penny Leslie Farmer passed away at home on the night of Friday, October 3, 2025, in the company of her family. Born on August 10, 1939, in Spokane, Washington, Penny dedicated her life to education, serving in the personnel department of the LA Unified School District for over 30 years. Her commitment to fostering a nurturing and supportive environment for students and staff alike left a lasting impact on countless lives within the educational community.
Penny's dedication and love for her family knew no bounds. Affectionate, supportive, smart and funny, she left indelible marks on her children whose lives are informed by her every day. A voracious reader, she loved visits to the local library and evenings spent in bed with a mystery novel and a glass of white wine (preferably with an ice cube). She loved long walks on the beach collecting seashells and beach glass, and though she did not swim, was still adventurous enough to sail the channel to Catalina Island with her husband, Frank, at the helm. Upon her retirement from the LA Unified School District she indulged in shenanigans with the gals from Curves, along with being an active member of the Navy Yacht Club of Long Beach. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Penny was cherished by her beloved spouse, John Farmer, with whom she shared a life filled with love and companionship in Los Angeles. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home. Her family was her pride and joy; she is survived by her son Tony Farmer, who, along with his wife Susan Spratt, resides in Brooklyn, New York, and her daughter Laura Farmer, who is married to Dan Adams and lives in Burbank, California.
Penny’s legacy continues through her grandsons, Francis and Ossian Farmer, both of whom reside in Boulder, Colorado. She also opened her heart to her step-grandsons, Atticus and Prosper Wachsler of Brooklyn, New York, embracing them as her own.
In addition to her immediate family, Penny is survived by her sister Norma Jeanne Durkheimer of Scottsdale, Arizona, and her brother Butch Oglivy of Portland, Oregon. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, who will hold her memory dear.
Penny Leslie Farmer was a remarkable woman whose passion for education and dedication to her family were evident in everything she did. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
