Merced Avitia passed away on October 10, 2026, in Pico Rivera, California, at the age of 96. She was born on September 23, 1930, in Durango, Mexico, and throughout her life she was known as a woman whose love was expressed through care, generosity, and devotion to others.

Merced was a loving abuelita and a loving sister who found genuine happiness in caring for those around her and doing special things for others. That spirit of kindness shaped the way she lived and the way she will be remembered by her family and friends. She brought warmth to everyday life and leaves behind memories of a woman whose presence made others feel looked after and deeply loved.

She was also known as an excellent cook, especially for her delicious refried beans and her oatmeal. Those who enjoyed her meals knew that her food carried a special touch that made everything extra yummy. More than recipes, what made her cooking so memorable was the love she poured into it. Merced also had a passion for gardening, and her favorite flowers were geraniums, which reflected the beauty and care she appreciated in life.

Merced is survived by her daughters, Griseldo Castillo and Maria Julieta Torres.  She also leaves behind her granddaughters, Mabel Jimenez and Karla Carrillo. In addition, she is survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward the love and example she shared so freely. Her family will continue to cherish her tenderness, her strength, and the many ways she made home and family life brighter.

Merced will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her memory will live on in family gatherings, in lovingly prepared meals, and in the quiet beauty of a garden in bloom.

Visitation will be held on October 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Risher Mortuary & Cremation Service, 1316 W Whittier Blvd, Montebello, California 90640.
