JOHN DAVID
YANEZ
Jun 23, 1955 — Sep 2, 2026
John David Yanez, known to many as Gunny, entered into eternal rest on September 2, 2026, in Bell, California. He was born on June 23, 1955, in Los Angeles, California.
Mr. Yanez lived a life marked by service, commitment, and fellowship, especially among his fellow veterans. He served in both the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps, answering the call to serve his country with dedication and pride. His military service remained a defining part of his life, and he continued to support and stand beside veterans long after his time in uniform.
He was a proud member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22 of Montebello and a member of American Legion Post #804 of Los Angeles. He also served as past commandant of the PFC Eugene A. Obregon, Medal of Honor, Marine Corps League Detachment #1347. In addition, he was a member of the American GI Forum and the Marine Corps League. Among the many ways he gave back, one of the most meaningful was as the founder of Gunny's Griddle, a group devoted to feeding veterans. He founded Gunny's Griddle alongside fellow veteran Rick Cadenas, creating a source of care, fellowship, and practical support for those who had served.
John will be remembered with love by his sister, Rose Mary Best, and by his brother-in-law, Brent Best. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a man whose life was rooted in service to his country and compassion for his fellow veterans.
