Dorothy Elizabeth True passed away with granddaughters by her side on July 11, 2025 at 5:23 a.m. at the age of 90, the timing of which was significant as it was her wedding anniversary with her beloved husband of 68 years, Hubert R. True (who went by "Duke"), who preceded her in death on April 30, 2023.
Born January 12, 1935, Dorothy's life journey took her from Los Angeles to Hannibal, Missouri, where she became a renowned singer. It was there that she met a chorus singer (who was anything but a choir boy) who swept her off her feet. She and her crooner, "guess who", Hubert, were married in Las Vegas in 1955. Once wed, they made Montebello their home, and they spent most of their married life together. In her later years, Dorothy suffered medical setbacks and required specialty care, and Hubert (who refused to spend more than a night away from her) followed her to Villa Gardens in Pasadena. While not their beloved home, they made great memories with the staff at Villa and with their family, so close by.
Dorothy lived a life dedicated to service and family. She generously volunteered her time with the Children's Home Society, served actively in the PTA, and shared her voice with her church choir. A devoted civic participant, she worked the polls in many elections, deeply believing in the democratic process. Yet above all these accomplishments, Dorothy found her greatest joy and fulfillment in her role as grandmother and great-grandmother. She attended countless Clairbourn School performances, La Salle High School track meets, and graduations near and far.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Debra M. Casillas, and son-in-law Dr. J. F. Casillas, both of whom she cherished. She was the proud and devoted grandmother of Consuelo, Isabel, Juan Jr., Esiquio, Alexis, Vanessa, Taylor, Catherine, and Austin, and the loving great-grandmother of 17 great-grandchildren who brought immense happiness to her life.
Her legacy lives on through the many lives she touched and the large, loving family who will forever carry her memory in their hearts. We are comforted by the idea that Dorothy and Duke are reunited again, and awaiting all the grand things their progeny will take on and experience.
A memorial service celebrating Dorothy's life will be held on July 25, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at Risher Mortuary. A private interment service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Dorothy's memory. Her recent causes included Villa Esperanza, women's rights, and democracy.
