ALICE MAH

February 16, 1944 - April 11, 2022

Alice Mah Miller 馬雅俐, passed away April 11th, 2022 surrounded by family when she was removed from life support following a severe stroke on April 6th, 2022. Born 馬戎粧 in China, February 16th, 1944 (Lunar) / March 10th, 1944 (Solar), to Park Sam Mah 馬伯森 and Lai Ying Wong 黃麗影. Her family emigrated from Hong Kong to the US when she was 12. She grew up in New York city where she met and married Herbert Buck - Hing Ott 余伯顯. While raising her two sons, she furthered her education and received two Masters Degrees. She was proud of her accomplishments, as very few students were selected for and even fewer completed the grueling schedule required in the double Masters program. Her family then moved to California, where she became a lifetime credentialed teacher. For over 30 years she enjoyed educating children, and adults. During Alice’s retirement years she and her second husband, Craig, enjoyed dancing and traveling all over the world. Her last trip was to Antarctica, the last continent she wanted to visit. Alice has always given of herself and has been involved with several organizations over the years, including the following:  National Smooth Dancers – Secretary, Social Chair, Newsletter Editor, and 2019 Queen Foothill Unity Center, SGV local food bank National Alliance on Mental Illness Chinese American Citizens Alliance 美洲同源總會 – GSGV Vice President 2012 - 2013 Chinese American Education Association 南加州華裔家長教師協會 – Vice President 1994, Journal Editor-in-Chief, President 2008-2010 Toastmasters Club – CTM, Area B- 3 Governor 1996-1997 Arcadia Library – English Conversation Tutor Arcadia Chinese Association 亞凱迪亞華人協會 Mar Family Association, Los Angeles 南加省馬氏宗親會 – Vice President 2014 Monterey Park, Art and Culture Commission – Commissioner Los Angeles 1984 Olympics – Public Relations, Translator Alice is survived by her loving family: Husband Craig, together for 25 wonderful years. Sons: Lawrence and Michael Younger siblings: Chester, Shirley, Shing, and Richie Alice will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her unique soul. The family requests, in lieu of flowers or gifts, please donate to any charity in Alice’s name. Alice’s favorite charities are: Foothill Unity Center & Brooklyn College where Alice got her Master of Science in Education. Alice’s celebration of life memorial will be at 11:30am on June 24th, 2022 in Monterey Park, CA. All friends and family of Alice are invited to attend.
